ESD for 2030 Global Network

UNESCO Launched the ESD for 2030 Global Network

On 4 October 2022, hundreds came together online to participate in the launch webinar of UNESCO’s ESD for 2030 Global Network (ESD-Net 2030). With the support of the Government of Japan, UNESCO’s new network aims to facilitate the implementation of the ESD for 2030 framework and its Roadmap by enhancing knowledge sharing, collaboration, mutual learning, advocacy, monitoring, and evaluation, among a wide range of education stakeholders. The launch webinar introduced the objective and planned activities of the Network and featured interventions from several Member States as well as an interactive session highlighting the relationship between culture and sustainability.

The first session of the webinar provided an overview of the ESD for 2030 Country Initiatives – country plans that map, mobilize and create synergies among ongoing and new ESD activities that Member States are currently developing and implementing as part of the ESD for 2030 Roadmap. In the second half of the webinar, as part of ESD-Net 2030’s series of global interactive learning workshops on ESD pedagogy, Ki Culture highlighted the unique role of art and culture in mainstreaming ESD. Participants were then encouraged to try out some of these practices and prepare a short video or photo essay of their experiences.

ESD-Net 2030's call to action not only sets a precedent for potential collaboration on ESD, but also mobilizes key stakeholders to accelerate initiatives centered on promoting and implementing ESD and efforts aimed at overcoming common local, national, and regional challenges.

UN Transforming Education Summit Reaffirms the Need for Education for Sustainable Development

The UN Transforming Education Summit (TES), which took place from 16-19 September in New York, reaffirmed the critical role that education plays in responding to these global challenges as over 130 countries heed the call to reimagine key transformative elements essential to ensuring that education contributes to building peaceful societies, a healthy planet, and shared progress that benefits all.

On the occasion of the 3-day summit, world leaders highlighted the central role of ESD in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges during the parallel session, Greening Education Partnership: Getting Every Learner Climate-Ready, which took place on 17 September – Solutions Day; as well as the spotlight session, Transforming education to transform the world: Learning to live together sustainably, which took place on 19 September – Leaders Day.

Leaders Day brought a close to the UN Transforming Education Summit, which led to a slew of announcements containing new, tangible commitments made by Member States to transform education through holistic, inclusive, and forward-thinking policies and practices. As the UN specialized agency for education, UNESCO will carry this momentum forward to achieve the global objective of quality education for all by 2030.

From the Field

Cultivating co-existence through sustainable waste management in Zimbabwe

Do you think humans and monkeys can co-exist in the same place without harming each other?  For Marymount Teachers College, a teachers training college located in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe, the answer would be “yes”. That is because ESD workshops and training sessions have allowed members of the community to learn how to preserve and respect their environment.

One of Marymount Teachers College’s most pressing challenges is its production of excessive waste. Human settlement has been increasing over the years in parallel with additional waste and littering, disrupting local ecosystems. Coexistence with primates has therefore become strained.

In order to promote sustainable management of waste, Gilbert Nyabadza and Vimbayi Matsongoni, two lecturers at Marymount College, established that there was a danger of primates and humans spreading diseases to each other, as well as unfettered urban expansion which exposes animals to poisonous foods and other waste materials. They concluded that solutions must be implemented to restore balance to the ecosystem. While efforts have been made to promote animal rights, the community decided to explore alternative solutions to foster meaningful co-habitation with wildlife and nature.

The Green Office Movement is Sprouting New Offices Across Europe

In 2015, the Green Office Model piloted by the Students Organizing for Sustainability International (formerly known as rootAbility) received the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development, a biennial prize that honors outstanding projects that advance the role of education in connecting the social, economic, cultural and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Funded by the Government of Japan, the Prize consists of three biennial awards of USD 50,000 for each recipient to further advance ESD.

In 2022, Green Office Gent was the host of the BelGO meet-up for all Belgian Green Offices. This meet-up was organized together with the Flemish Government’s environmental department.

More than 80 Green Offices around the world aim to give students a voice for sustainability at their institutions, while also helping students develop themselves professionally. To support Green Offices, the Green Office Movement (GOM) offers membership and national and international networking opportunities.
